Father Figures: So Fast

“When Westyn was 4, her and her sister loved to Irish dance. We had a St Patrick’s Day parade where they danced along with their Uncle playing his pipes with the Las Vegas fire department.
The next morning I was at work when my wife called me and said ‘Westyn is walking funny, she’s dragging her right foot.’ I said get her to the ER, I’m leaving work.
After all day in two hospitals here in Vegas, sher and I were mede-vacced out to Stanford Children’s hospital. She had a cavernous malformation that was bleeding in her brain. The doctor said it was stable, “Go back to Vegas and we’ll schedule surgery for 2 weeks.” We went home.
That night she and I were watching Tangled and she said ‘Daddy, I see two Rapunzels.’ Back to the hospital, it was still bleeding and causing pressure. Went back to ER and Medevac #2 to Stanford. Surgery was moved up to the next day.
By the time her surgery came, she could barely speak and couldn’t focus her vision at all; everything was double. The 6-hour surgery felt like an eternity. There’s nothing you can do and you feel totally helpless.
Surgery was a success and we had to stay for 7 days to monitor. We went home and instantly started PT. The pure will of a child is amazing. Within four months she went from not being able to stand at all to doing ladder exercises.
Now, almost 2 years later, you can’t even tell. She runs, skateboards, jump rope, you name it she’s on it. I tell my wife that experience definitely took years off my life, she amazes me with her progress and will to overcome everything.
Things can happen so fast. Tell them how much you love them everyday.”
