Father Figures: Sunshine

“This first holiday season with my Dad in heaven.
I can’t listen to “I’ll be home for Christmas” or any holiday song without a lump in my throat. I have such happy memories of my childhood, my life with my Dad here on earth and for that I know I am lucky.
My dad was a smart, hardworking, proud, confident and content man (goes without saying but… so handsome too!). If his blue eyes and smile didn’t get you, his warmth and humor would. He is loved and now missed beyond measure.
My dad wasn’t a man of many words nor was he the disciplinarian but when he weighed in, you knew it was important. He’d always say blood is thicker than water and family is everything. He built the close-knit family we are today and where would we be without each other, as we grieve? I thank God and my dad for this everyday.
A classic dadism: he’d say, ‘don’t be afraid, if you’re scared.” We have laughed it this but in time, I have given this advice its due and taken it to heart during my toughest times.
In this uncontrollable and unpredictable life, take one thing at a time. If you have the tendency to compound (as I do), don’t be afraid, you’re scared. Deal with one thing, one feeling at a time, as you can.
My dad was the closest thing to sunshine that I have ever felt and his positive light lives on in so many. Here’s to loving all your lights extra this holiday season and beyond.”
