A person’s true character is reflected in the choices they make when nobody’s watching. We rarely get glimpses into that side of people because, well, nobody’s there to see it. Unless, like this street vendor in Puebla, Mexico, your kindness is unexpectedly caught on camera.
In a video shared by a local media outlet, the unnamed street vendor demonstrates what it means to be truly selfless. The video opens with the vendor in question walking slowly down a nearly empty street, his daily food inventory strapped to his back. As the vendor looks behind him, he realizes the street isn’t quite as empty as he imagined.
Two stray dogs follow him tentatively, hungrily, and wistfully eying his container of food. In all likelihood, the street vendor makes most if not all of his money selling food to locals. His livelihood depends on it, but on this particular day, someone else’s needs felt more important than his own.
Without hesitation, the vendor takes the bin of food off of his back and pulls out a bag. The dogs pause hopefully, taking in the familiar, taunting smell of someone else’s food. But that day, the mouth-watering scent wasn’t paired with disappointment. The vendor tosses a generous amount of food to each dog, likely providing them with their first good meal in a while.
A third dog appears from down the road, and he too is met with the vendor’s generosity and compassion. The small but important gesture is touching in its purity. The vendor expects absolutely nothing in return, aside from the satisfaction of knowing he made a difference.
The video has accumulated over 4.7 million views in under a month, with thousands of comments pouring in from around the world. Not a single word is uttered in the minute-long video, but the vendor’s actions speak volumes – the language of kindness is universal.
