The People Chose Hugh Jackman Over Ryan Reynolds in Their Charitable “Feud”

Jackman v Reynolds
(YouTube/Sam's Club)

We should all have a frienemy like Ryan Reynolds has in Hugh Jackman. The two regularly Face/Off but were more recently locked in a bitter, and entertaining “feud” for charity. A winner has been named, but the true winner in this is us, for the periodic bouts of enjoyment their feud has given us. Oh, and also the two charities who raised a bunch of money.

And now we’ve learned, more people like Hugh Jackman, so he got to rub in Reynolds‘ face. The two were raising money with Sam’s Club for charities, but it still pitted the two longtime “rivals” against each other to see who was more popular. Jackman got to break the news to Reynolds himself, summing it pretty succinctly “You lost the Sam’s Club thing, I won. Everyone hates you, bye!”

During the holiday season, Sam’s Club members were encouraged to vote for which celebrity (and charity) they preferred. On one side, Hugh Jackman was supporting the Laughing Man Foundation, which helps support coffee farming communities around the globe. On the other side, our coolest superhero, Ryan Reynolds, and his charity SickKids Foundation, which works for the health and well-being of children. And more people, apparently, picked Jackman. This is not how Reynolds saw it playing out.

But here’s the good part, this bit of theatrics between the two who clearly have a lot of love between them earned two charities a good amount of money. That was in the “fine print” of the “feud,” that Sam’s Club would be making an equal donation to both, so really, both the SickKids Foundation and the Laughing Man Foundation were winners.

The only loser here was Reynolds. But, Reynolds won’t go down without a fight. And while the battle may be ended, the war is not, and I expect the “feud” to continue indefinitely.

Deadpool 3 Will Bring Ryan Reynolds Into the MCU as His R-Rated Self

Deadpool 3 R Rated

Amid the flurry of news Disney has been releasing over the past few weeks was confirmation that the Fantastic Four is entering the MCU and that the X-Men may not be far behind. We also know Spider-Man 3 is percolating, along with the Dr. Strange sequel, both of which may pave the way for various universes to interact with our established characters.

One established character who is awaiting a sequel is everyone’s favorite R-rated superhero, Deadpool. So what of the foul-mouthed merc?

While doing press ahead of the premiere of Disney+’s WandaVision series, MCU head Kevin Feige confirmed that Deadpool 3 is not only in the works but that Ryan Reynolds‘ decidedly un-family-friendly snark will be officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And he’ll still be R-rated.

“It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now… It will not be [filming] this year,” Feige told Collider.

“Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.”

Sounds like the movie won’t even begin filming until 2022, so it will be a while before we get any idea what it’s about or how it fits into the current MCU timeline.

Whether it hits theaters in 2023 or later, it sounds like it will be worth the wait, just to see exactly how someone like Deadpool fits in with the wholesome Avengers team. Let’s just say Steve Rogers is probably glad he left the team, otherwise he’d be bound to have a heart attack hearing the stuff that flies out of Wade Wilson’s potty mouth!

Ryan Reynolds Enlists His Mom to Trash-Talk Chris Hemsworth

(Twitter/VancityReynolds)

Everyone knows Ryan Reynolds is a nice guy.

He often plays a bit of a jerk on-screen, and he often plays a bit of a jerk on social media, but it’s clear he’s actually a really nice guy. First of all, he’s Canadian. Second of all, he does a fair amount of charity work, and third of all, he treats coworkers with respect.

His mom, though. She’s a real piece of work!

I’m kidding. Sort of. Because Reynolds recently recruited his mom to help him trash talk his opponents in the AGNO Superhero fantasy football league, in which various “superheroes,” aka actors who’ve portrayed them onscreen, compete against each other for charity.

This week, Reynolds is matched up with “everybody’s least favorite Australian” Chris Hemsworth, and because he plays fair, Deadpool declined to start beef with his opponent. Instead, he had his mother do it via video on Twitter – and provided this little intro beforehand.

“To my fellow @agboleague superhero fantasy football players. I don’t trash talk. Even if it’s ‘required,'” Reynolds tweeted, before unleashing his mom. “Even if it benefits the astounding work of @sickkids hospital. Disparaging others isn’t what heroes do. I was raised to treat friends with respect. #ChrisHevansprine.”

Reynolds then shared a video in which his mom, Tammy, talks shit about Thor for a solid minute, from a script Reynolds provided.

“Chris Hemsworth is everyone’s least-favorite Australian. And as a reminder, Hugh Jackman still exists,” Tammy Reynolds says. She calls Hemsworth a “no-good asshat who looks like a bodybuilder f—ed a platypus.”

The rest of the video is censored because, despite her clear hatred for Hemsworth, Tammy can’t bring herself to say some of the things her son wrote for her. But even with the bleeps, the Reynolds family doesn’t pull their punches!

We Have Ryan Reynolds and Taylor Swift To Thank for the Funniest Ad of 2020

Reynolds Match Ad
(Twitter/VancityReynolds/Maximum Effort)

There are only a few weeks left in the hellish year that is 2020, and we finally have the perfect commercial to sum the insanity. And we have Deadpool and T-Swift to thank for it. Reynolds and his content studio Maximum Effort put together the commercial, and it’s a snippet of Taylor Swift’s newly re-recorded ‘Love Story’ that plays in the background as Satan and “2020” fall in love.

The legit funny Match ad shows the beginning of a relationship between Satan and “2020.” There’s the meet-cute, the courtship, and the ensuing relationship, full of pandemic jokes like taking a selfie in front of a dumpster fire and stealing toilet paper from restrooms. There’s even a picnic in the middle of an empty NFL stadium. Everything you think Satan and 2020 would enjoy.

Reynolds shared it, saying “a match made in hell is still a match.”

“Match is responsible for bringing millions of people together and even in this dumpster fire of a year, people somehow found love on Match,” he said in a statement. “We just imagined what a ‘2020 match’ would look like and this video was the natural, slightly warped result. Also, this stuff gives me something to think about during the board meetings.”

For her part, Swift said her new recordings aren’t done yet, but that she couldn’t say no to Reynolds when he asked for her help with the ad he wrote.

A Match executive said Reynolds and his team created a story that “speaks to this hellish year” while acknowledging the resilience of singles.

The commercial is pitch-perfect, as is the norm for all things Reynolds lately. The guy just gets the zeitgeist in a way most don’t, and he keeps delivering time and time again.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively Donate $500,000 To Help at-Risk Youth in Canada

We’ll never grow tired of watching celebrities use their fame and fortune for good. If there’s anyone who’s fully embodied the spirit of giving back, it’s Deadpool star and all-around sweetheart, Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds is generous with his financial donations, and his generosity with his time further demonstrates his compassion for others. Reynolds uses his privileged position to brighten the lives of his fans, his crew, and anyone lucky enough to cross his path.

This time, giving back is a family affair for Ryan Reynolds and his wife of eight years, Blake Lively. Canadian-born Reynolds has always had a soft spot for his home country, supporting a number of Canadian charities over the years. Most recently, Reynolds and Lively made a generous donation to Covenant House, an organization that supports homeless, at-risk, and trafficked youth. In total, the couple donated $500,000 to the incredible organization – $250,000 to Covenant House Vancouver, and $250,000 to the center’s Toronto location.

“Ryan and Blake truly understand that young people who are facing homelessness deserve unconditional love and absolute respect,” Krista Thompson, CEO of Covenant House Vancouver said in a press release. “Their generous donation and compassionate support mean so much to Covenant House and we are truly grateful for their continued friendship. Just like Ryan and Blake, we hope this gift highlights the value of each and every youth; and inspires others to open their hearts to those struggling with the crisis of homelessness.”

In normal times, the work Covenant House does is extremely taxing. Taking in youth who have fled unsafe situations, who often come in with severe trauma, is a monumental feat. Without safe havens like Covenant House, those who walk through their doors would have little chance at the security and support it takes to recover from their trauma. Reynolds and Lively encourage others to donate as well, and an Instagram post by the organization explains that donations will be matched through the month of December.

According to the Covenant House website, the services they provide are extensive. While Covenant House operates as a crisis shelter with transitional housing, they also provide counseling, health care, education, job training, and so much more to 16-24-year-olds regardless of their backgrounds. Ultimately, Covenant House provides every individual they serve with a much-needed sense of security, and perhaps more importantly, a sense of hope.

“They do the work of heroes,” Reynolds said. “For us, helping Covenant House this way isn’t a donation, but an investment in compassion and empathy; something the world needs more of. The young people who pass through the doors of Covenant House more often than not have a story marked by extraordinary trauma. They are so much more than that trauma. They have so much to offer the world. Matching this gift is saying you believe in them. You believe in the power of compassion to transform the trajectory of a human being.”

Ryan Reynolds Records Over 400 Videos to Thank Movie Crew

The pandemic has given us all a lot more free time.

When we were quarantined, we caught up on our favorite shows and binged new sensations like The Last Dance and Tiger King. But now it’s months later, and we’re just about out of TV to watch. And if you work in show business, odds are you don’t even have any work to do, as most productions have been shut down. One person that’s kept us entertained is Ryan Reynolds. If he’s not trolling Hugh Jackman for charity he’s sending a heartwarming video message to a fan.

Luckily for Ryan Reynolds, one of his movies was recently able to finish production, after having been shut down in March, and the star knows how challenging it was for everyone to get it done. So despite being busier than many actors, he used some of his free time over Thanksgiving to show his gratitude for the people who make his job easier.

Reynolds posted a photo on Instagram to celebrate the wrap of his film Red Notice, which co-stars Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot, acknowledging how difficult it was for the actors and the crew to film under extreme conditions.

But he didn’t just post to social media. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds recorded over 400 messages to thank each member of his crew for their hard work and sacrifice. he thanked them and their families for enduring the months of isolation necessary to safely complete the film.

He even thanked their dogs.

“I made videos for their dogs,” he said. “Morale was so low because everyone was in lockdown. They couldn’t go anywhere but work or the hotel. In some cases, their families were at home less than a mile away. I can’t imagine that kind of longing.”

When the movie ended, he also made sure every member of the crew left with a bottle of his Aviation Gin, (no word on whether or not it was the homeschool edition) and a personalized note.

“Awesome group of people,” he said. “What they did was so hard.”

He’s pretty awesome too.

Ryan Reynolds Cheers up Boy Without Friends on His Birthday

Reynolds Birthday Message
(Facebook/damiensbirthdayproject)

Moving can be hard on kids. You’re in a new school, your old friends are gone, and it can take some time to get adjusted. Moving right before a birthday sucks even more, and just serves to amplify that lonely feeling. An 8-year-old boy in British Columbia (that’s in Canada, for you less than Cosmopolitan types) was struggling after a recent move and was worried about turning 9 without any friends. So his parents put the call out on social media to have strangers send him cards, so his birthday would still be special.

Turns out he got 1,000 of them. And even better, movie star Ryan Reynolds sent the boy a video message relating to his struggle and wishing him a happy birthday. Let’s pause 10 seconds for our routine Ryan Reynolds appreciation. The Deadpool star, and girl-dad seemingly has a heart of freaking gold. He (and his wife Blake Lively) have donated millions this year to charities supporting COVID-19 response and charities focused on children. Reynolds helped reunite a child with his lost toy, bought a soccer team with Always Sunny star Rob McElhenney, and also found the time to write 400 thank you notes to the crew working on his new movie during the pandemic. He even went above and beyond to connect with a Deadpool cosplayer. And this isn’t even covering half of the great stuff he’s done this year.

So we are not surprised that Reynolds would make little Damien’s birthday one he will never forget.

Reynolds, who is also Canadian, told Damien he relates to his story because he went to a new school when he was a kid (a few of them) and remembers how alienating it felt. “I remember how alone I felt and unseen I felt,” he said.

“I guess the point is that you’re not alone.”

Reynolds wished him a happy birthday and said he hopes he gets to meet him in person one of these days.

His family told local media they were blown away by the message and were thrilled to see Damien’s expression change when he realized what was going on. They said the entire project of making their kid’s birthday extra special left them feeling profoundly grateful.

Now Damien can proudly go to school knowing Deadpool himself took the time to wish him a happy birthday.

Ryan Reynolds Says He Loves Having Daughters and ‘Being a Girl Dad’

The coolest celebrities are the ones that don’t take themselves too seriously and manage to keep things in perspective, and few people check both boxes like Ryan Reynolds. He went up another notch in our book, thanks to his latest interview with Access Hollywood, where Reynolds talks about how much he loves ‘being a girl dad.’

We already appreciated Reynolds for stuff he’s done like Deadpool and bringing Rick Moranis out of retirement. We dig him even more for how much he loves being a dad. He was talking to Access Hollywood, promoting his new movie “The Croods: A New Age”, when he said his daughters (and wife Blake Lively) are ‘the most capable people I know.’

“If anything got scary in my life, they’re the first people I would lean on because they have wisdom and strength and they’re calm under fire,” he said. “They have courage under fire.”

Reynolds said, as the youngest of four boys, he never ‘in a million years’ imagined he’d have three daughters. But, he said he loves it.

“It has just been such a ride, and I love every second of it,” he said. He also explained that he and his wife don’t do movies at the same time, so the family can stay together at all times.

“ I think that’s been the best part of it is that we really don’t spend a lot of time apart. I get to spend a lot of time with my girls.”

Reynolds also feels the same frustration many parents have had when it comes to homeschooling. When he was on The Tonight Show in the spring, he said the family was getting through it by trying to make it as educational as possible, before joking (admitting?) he’s been “mostly drinking.”

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Bought a Soccer Team Together

(Twitter/WrexhamAFC)

“The Gang Buys A Welsh Football Club.” It’s the Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode you never knew you needed, now that actor (and Sunny co-creator) Rob McElhenney and movie star Ryan Reynolds have teamed up to buy a Welsh soccer team. It’s one of those stories that only make sense in 2020.

Reynolds, aka Deadpool and home school gin connoisseur, can seemingly do no wrong, so we’ll get to see if his magic touch can extend to Wrexham AFC, one of the oldest professional soccer teams and one that’s currently entrenched in the fifth tier of English soccer. But the two are serious about turning the team around and plan to make it a “global force” around the soccer universe.

“This is really happening,” Reynolds said in a video released by the team. The club is fan-owned and approved the takeover by the two celebrities. Apparently, the duo did a lot of research after deciding they wanted to buy a soccer team and thought Wrexham AFC had the most potential.

Reynolds said he and McElhenney want to be at as many games as possible (once fans are allowed, post-pandemic) and ‘want to have a pint with the fans.’ They also plan to be ‘great ambassadors for the club’ and want to introduce them to the world.

The Wrexham Supporters Trust Board voted overwhelmingly to sell to the two celebs, as they have serious plans for community engagement and plans to improve their standing in the soccer world. Chief among them is a behind-the-scenes documentary to help bring more fans into the fold.

“You may never have heard of Wrexham, but you will. So to the Wrexham Supporters Trust, thank you for your faith and trust in us,” McElhenney said.

Reynolds added: “We are humbled and we are already getting to work.”

So now that two of our coolest and funniest celebrities have bought a soccer team, we all have a Cinderella squad to root for as Wrexham AFC works its way out of the cellar of the soccer world.

Ryan Reynolds Responds To Tweet, Donates Winter Gear To Kids in Northern Canada

Winter is coming. For some of us that means adding a layer or two, or finally admitting that it’s time to put away the sandals. But for kids in Nunavut, a territory of Northern Canada, winter means piling on every layer you own knowing you’ll probably still be cold. Temperatures in this sparsely-populated territory average around -30°C or -22°F in the winter, making proper cold weather attire a must-have. Unfortunately, many kids are under-equipped for the extreme temperatures.

When a singer-songwriter named Becky Han who grew up in the Arctic Bay contacted a local school to see if they needed school supplies, the principal hoped to address a different necessity.

According to CBS, Principal Gregg Durrant explained, “It’s pretty cold, and some kids don’t have the proper gear. We have kids among us who really didn’t have enough. Sometimes they would come in and we as staff would think, you know, that this kid really needs a new pair of boots or they need a proper parka.”

Han posted a tweet on behalf of her hometown school, requesting donations.

Though Han only expected a small response from her tweet, she soon got a message that she assumed was fake (because who wouldn’t?). The message read, “I saw the tweets and how can I help?”

After going to the account’s profile, she made a startling discovery. That was no fake profile – the simple message and offer of help came from Canadian-born sweetheart Ryan Reynolds.

“And I was just touched,” Han said. “I was grateful that, you know, people are listening and he wanted to help out … and that he has concern over Inuit in Nunavut.”

She gave Reynolds Principal Durrant’s contact information to determine what supplies were most desperately needed.

“Oh, yes, that was quite interesting,” Durrant recalled casually. “You know, I got an email saying, ‘This is Ryan Reynolds and what your needs are in terms of winter gear.’ And yeah, we started emailing back and forth and yeah, that was that.”

Reynolds then contacted some friends at Canada Goose to get them on board. According to Gavin Thompson, the vice-president of corporate citizenship at Canada Goose, Reynolds has been a friend of the company for over 10 years. In under a week, a shipment of 300 brand new Canada Goose parkas, boots, gloves, socks, and hats was on its way to the
Inuujaq school in Arctic Bay.

When the shipment arrived, the students were over the moon. Durrant recalled, “When the students were leaving the gym because they put on their parkas trying to make sure that whatever gear they were getting were suitable for them in terms of size, they were like, ‘Thank you, Gregg! Thank you, Gregg!’ I’m like, ‘Yes, it’s thank you, Ryan! Thank you, Ryan!’”
