Over the years, Monopoly has come out with countless themed versions of the game, from sports-themed editions to Sex and the City styled boards. Now Hasbro has finally released a Game of Thrones edition, just in time for the premiere of the HBO juggernaut’s eighth an final season.
Usually, when you play Monopoly, the stakes don’t involve anything more intense than a lost turn or some extra rent. But then, you haven’t played this latest version of Monopoly, themed after George R.R. Martin’s and HBO’s massive fantasy epic. Win this edition of the classic ode to capitalism and you can end up on the Iron Throne. Or at least save yourself from falling through the moon door.
The game is listed at thirty bucks on Amazon and has plenty of cool GoT touches. The board is silver and black, the tokens are “inspired by the Honorary sigils of the great houses,” the cash is now “42 gold Dragon and 53 silver stags cardboard coins,” and the houses and hotels are replaced by holdfasts and castles.
The gameplay is the same as you remember it – there’s even still the corner jail, which inexplicably wasn’t replaced with a dungeon or something – but instead of Park Place and railroads, the board is littered with Westeros locations familiar to fans of the books and show. There’s Hardhome, the site of the infamous white walker battle, the Cave of the Three-Eyed Raven, where Bran spent some time a few seasons ago, and, of course, Winterfell and King’s Landing, which figures prominently throughout the entire series.
There’s even an iron throne card holder with a music stand that plays the Game of Thrones theme song at the press of a button, which I’m sure won’t get even slightly annoying…especially when tempers start to flare about 4 hours into gameplay.
The Game of Thrones edition of Monopoly is available now, and it looks like a fun way to bypass the time until April brings the end of the eight-season run.
