Sometimes you don’t realize your lessons are sinking in with your kids until one day they do something extraordinary and you see they’ve been listening all along. 11-year-old Brody Sims was definitely listening to his parents when they told him what to do if there were ever a fire in their home, and when the little boy saw flames in his kitchen, he swooped into action. The 11-year-old big brother is now a hero after grabbing his four younger siblings and getting them all out of the house and to safety.
“My mom and dad told us, if there was a fire, to grab everyone and run out of the house and call 911,” he told WSMV, and that’s exactly what he did. “All you could see was just smoke coming out. I was just standing right here, and my sister called 911.”
The full story emerged on Brody’s aunt Hannah’s GoFundMe page for the family after the fire burned down their home. “He ran past the fire to get his 2-year-old brother, who was in a bedroom in the back of the house,” Hannah wrote. “I was just crying and yelling my brother’s name,” Brody told the local news. He was quick to downplay his heroics. “I did what any big brother would do.”
Brody’s mom, Kimberly, was not home at the time and couldn’t be more proud of her kids. “I’m just really thankful the kids have been trained what to do in emergencies. We’re unbelievably proud.”
The family survived, thanks to Brody, but their home did not. “Their house is completely destroyed, along with most of their belongings, including awards their dad got while in the army as well as the kids’ toys and clothes,” Hannah wrote on the fundraiser page.
This is especially devastating in the middle of the holiday season, but at least the family still has each other, which is what matters most of all. Way to go, Brody.
