“We celebrated our son’s first birthday today from his hospital room.
Baby has been hospitalized for 40 days so far during this stint (and another 3 months and a week prior to this stay). My husband spent all day trying to decorate for his Zoom Karaoke Luau (to substitute for our planned, safe trip to Hawaii) just to have the baby get sick immediately before the party.
It’s reflective of our life this last year – baby with severe preexisting conditions that made him one of few kids at high risk for COVID and who often got sick at the most inopportune times.
We did everything we could to give Kingston a special day to break the monotony of another 40 days in a hospital room. At the beginning of the party, Dad sat in front of a projected Zoom gallery holding the sick baby as he straddled consciousness while I explained to the 50+ attendees that baby has been throwing up bile for the last hour and can’t stay awake. Dad still (reluctantly) helped entertain the crowd with a karaoke performance.
Most importantly, he had the patience and understanding to comfort the baby to sleep even after putting days into planning this party for him.”
