In a time of such political unrest and social change, it’s hard to know exactly what the future will hold. If only we could get a glimpse of what lies ahead. Well, pack your bags, children of the ’90s, as we set off to the year 2022.
Fans of Nintendo 64’s Goldeneye 007 have a new reason to rejoice, as developers are hard at work rebuilding the classic first-person shooter. GoldenEye 25, named for the 25th anniversary of the original’s release, is scheduled to be completed in just a few short years. While that may seem like a long time to wait, the game’s developers are rebuilding each detail of the game from scratch, utilizing modern, updated graphics. Everything from the lighting, to textures and characters, are being retooled from the ground up for the PC utilizing Epic Game’s Unreal Engine.
Diehard players can look forward to crisp, sharp graphics, all while playing the same maps and missions as the original. New players will likely note the graphics aren’t all that amazing, but for us aging gamers who cut their teeth on the original back in 1997, it’s like night and day.
The developers behind the unauthorized reboot have been down this road before. The same duo released Goldeneye: Source back in 2016. It’s more of an homage to the original game’s multiplayer mode, with HD graphics and dozens of refreshed maps to play through.
However it, like the new Goldeneye 25’s future, lies in the hands of the game’s original maker. Due to copyright laws and legal mumbo jumbo, the games are technically illegal but live a gray area that major publishers don’t often venture into. Needless to say, when it finally drops, grab it quick.
We’ll continue to follow the progress and share new updates as they become available.
