Harry Potter has been in the news a lot lately, largely because it’s the 20th anniversary of the first movie. One of the stories that have been making the rounds – and that made the rounds here on The Dad – was about original director Christopher Columbus’s desire to adopt the stage play sequel to the series, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
The way Columbus sees it, the stars of the original films – Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint – have finally aged the 20 years or so necessary to credibly play the thirtysomething their characters are during that sequel story. No such plans are afoot, as far as we know, but fans would love it.
For now, the closest we’re getting to that trio reuniting again in a Harry Potter movie is on HBO Max, either watching the originals or watching the streaming service’s upcoming reunion special.
Today, Warner Bros announced “Return to Hogwarts,” a Harry Potter reunion special to air on HBO Max, according to Variety.
The special, which will air on HBO Max on January 1, 2022, kicking off the new year in style, will “tell an enchanting making-of story through all-new, in-depth interviews and cast conversations,” according to Variety. It won’t just be the three stars either, as the special promises to feature multiple other stars of the 8-film series. Unfortunately, none of those names have been revealed as of yet, but if it’s anything like HBO Max’s Friends reunion special, we’re sure the network will pull out all the stops to make sure some of the big names are included, maybe even He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
The first Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone had its theatrical premiere exactly twenty years ago today. Meanwhile, the third film in the Fantastic Beasts spin-off series, “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” hit theaters this spring.
No word yet on whether The Cursed Child is headed towards production, but wouldn’t a reunion special be a great place to announce it?
