The devastating Surfside condo collapse last month left a haze of panic and heartbreak in its wake. The magnitude of loss shook Miami-Dade County and beyond as rescue efforts began, and tragically, the rescue mission soon turned into a recovery mission. Through the immense tragedy of the condo’s collapse, some good news has emerged in the form of a cat named Binx.
Binx lived on the 9th floor of the Surfside condo with the Gonzalez family, and when the condo collapsed, Binx’s family feared they’d never see him again. Angela and Edgar Gonzalez lived in unit 904 with their two daughters, Deven and Tayler. Tayler wasn’t home during the time of the building’s collapse, but Angela and Deven fell several floors. Miraculously, they survived with non-life-threatening injuries. Edgar, sadly, is still missing.
A local volunteer who regularly fed animals in the area noticed a black cat wandering the streets, and rather than assume he was a stray, the good samaritan brought him to a local animal shelter. Upon his arrival, the shelter staff identified him as none other than Binx.
“In the middle of this sadness, we were hoping for good news either for any survivors or any pet,” Maria Gaspari, a friend of the Gonzalez family, told WSVN. “As you may know, pets are family, and this is a miracle. I’m shaking right now.”
After 16 long and incredibly difficult days, I’m able to share a small piece of good news — Binx from Champlain Towers South has been found.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of our community to the team who played a role in reuniting him with his family. pic.twitter.com/yzDxW6plHG

After the massive trauma, the Gonzalez family desperately needed some good news, and their entire community needed a shred of hope. Binx, the small jet-black cat, provided both. Angela and Deven Gonzalez are recovering from their injuries, and thankfully, Binx and his family are together once again.
