The King Arthur saga is pretty well-known. At the very least, most of us have heard about the sword in the stone, Excaliber, the Knights of the Round Table, Camelot. They’ve made multiple movies about it, and recently reinvented it for the modern age in the fun “The Kid Who Would Be King.”
But all of those versions are about a man – or a boy – who possesses the unique power to pull Excalibur from the stone and claim the throne. A new take on the legend, courtesy of Netflix, imagines a woman retrieving the famous sword and staking her claim to rule the kingdom.
It’s called Cursed, and it stars Katherine Langford, recently seen in Knives Out and most well-known for her starring role in the streaming service’s notorious 13 Reasons Why series.
Her character seems quite different than that tortured teenager, and if the trailer is any indication, she’ll be a lot less passive this time around, as she teams up with Arthur, who doesn’t sound like quite the hero he usually is. The show, based on the book by Tom Wheeler and Frank Miller, debuts on July 17th
Here’s the official synopsis: “After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a humble mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther. Cursed is a coming-of-age story whose themes are familiar to our own time: the obliteration of the natural world, religious terror, senseless war, and finding the courage to lead in the face of the impossible.”
