Nicolas Cage has finally landed a role where chewing the scenery is sort of the point.
The actor has many a fine performance under his belt, including an Oscar-winning role as an alcoholic in Leaving Las Vegas. But my man also has a reputation for being a bit of a ham. Sometimes it works (Face/Off), sometimes it doesn’t (too many to list), and sometimes it doesn’t matter because his acting is so bizarre and over-the-top that it’s entertaining as hell regardless of the quality of it. And now he’s signed on for a role that could be the perfect combination of all of his skills: Dracula.
Cage has played a vampire before, famously eating a live cockroach in 1989’s Vampire’s Kiss, but Dracula is the most famous bloodsucker of all. And he’s not even the main character!
The movie is called Renfield and will star Nicolas Hoult (About a Boy) as the titular character, originated in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel. Renfield starts as a patient in an insane asylum who eventually becomes Dracula’s assistant. The details of the plot are not yet known, but The Hollywood Reporter describes it as “an adventure story” with a comedic tone.
The most comedic thing about this is the idea that anyone on earth would be able to steal the spotlight from Nicolas Cage as Dracula! I can’t wait to hear the accent he uses in this thing.
