The NHL’s Newest Team Now Has a Name: Seattle Kraken

The NHLâs newest franchise has unveiled its name and logo, as the expansion team in Seattle has officially announced it will be the Seattle Kraken. The Kraken will be the 32nd team in the NHL and will play in the western conference (naturally). But what really got sports fans fired up on social media this week were the jerseys.
A legend from the deep awakens.

Say what you will about the name, the jerseys and logos are pretty awesome. Even sports fans that try to look down on hockey because it oddly makes them feel superior have conceded that the logo and jerseys are dope. The Kraken will be just the fourth team name in NHL history that doesnât end in âsâ (joining the Avalanche, Lightning, and one other team I wonât name so you have to use google or go crazy).
âNHL Seattleâ made the announcement during a live-stream Thursday, and had plenty of âRelease the Krakenâ merch ready to go. The jerseys are likely going to be a huge hit, especially the secondary logo, which masterfully incorporates the cityâs space needle into the anchor.
For those who donât know what a Kraken is, itâsâŚa sea monster, pretty much. They originated from Scandinavian folklore as a monster that terrorized sailors, but are probably more recognizable from recent pop culture, such as appearances in âClash of the Titansâ and âPirates of the Caribbeanâ.

The Seattle Kraken will start play in the 2021-2022 season but their jerseys will likely become bestsellers long before that. One fan already has the first tattoo in team history.
