The Mortal Kombat Reboot: It Has Begun

Get ready for that kickass 90s tune to be stuck in your head for another decade because the Mortal Kombat reboot has officially begun filming.
“May the Elder Gods watch over us!” writer Greg Russo brutally teased via tweet along with a photo of a film slate and the hashtag #ITHASBEGUN, a reference to the 1995 film when Shang Tsung declares that the tournament between realms has, well… begun.

Russo isn’t the only one chatting about the film either. Mehcad Brooks who is cast to play the metal-armed Jackson “Jax” Briggs has already been pretty open about sharing aspects of his character on social media.
“Itâs so fun finding Jaxâs fighting style, his swag and his relentless power punches that need to feel like theyâd put a fucking hole in a barn,” Brooks shared on Instagram. “Happy to be working with some of the best stuntmen, sensei and fight choreography team in the business. Yâall ainât ready.”
While he hasn’t shown off any real choreographed scenes per se, Brooks definitely makes it sound like Jax will be bringing serious heat to his scenes.
Other actors starring in this hopefully good video game adaptation include Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, and Sisi Stringer as Mileena. The film is currently scheduled to release on March 5, 2021.
Fingers crossed that it’s more “flawless victory” and less “Johnny Cage-style punch to the groin.”
