Tony Hawk has been a legend in his sport for decades but still doesn’t get recognized in public. But soon the world will get a much closer look at the skating icon. Sam Jones is directing a documentary on Tony Hawk’s life and legacy that will hit theaters in 2022. It’s being produced by the Duplass brothers, and Hawk has given them unprecedented access to his life.
“We have already shot everything for it, it’s just in the editing process,” Hawk told Variety. “I definitely wanted to give them as much footage and interviews as possible.”
Co-Producer Mark Duplass told the paper he was floored by the stuff they got from Hawk and is fascinated by his relationship with his sport. And who wouldn’t be? The guy is basically the patron saint of skateboarding. Not only did he bring it into the mainstream (and even the Olympics), but he also inspired the next generation through an entirely different medium with his video game franchise. There are more than 20 titles in his franchise, selling millions of copies.

Hawk has some experience with Jones, as he was a guest on the director’s interview show. And for Jones, he said this is a passion project for him as he’s “been a skater my whole life.” We’re living in a golden age of documentaries, and this will be no different, as it will be a comprehensive look at the life and legacy of one of the coolest people in the sports/entertainment world.
