I had mixed feelings when the new Matrix movie was announced.
The previous two sequels were… not good, but the original definitely was, and Keanu is still kicking ass, so the idea isn’t all bad, and the cast sounds promising. But with the release date set for this December – in theaters and on HBO Max – it was getting weird that we didn’t get any footage. What are the Wachowskis hiding?
Finally, we got a glimpse of the new Matrix. On Tuesday, a trailer was teased via a really cool “red pill/blue pill” website, where users could choose each pill to see slightly different footage, and totally different narration, about the world of the new movie. And this morning the full trailer dropped.
Neo is back, bearded, clearly having picked up some fashion tips from John Wick, and he’s joined by Trinity and a whole new collection of characters. It looks like Neo is once again stuck in The Matrix with only dreams to remind him of the original saga, and once again he needs to be brought back to reality.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (fresh off of Candyman, Watchmen, and just about everything else) seems to be replacing Laurence Fishburne as the new Morpheus, Neil Patrick Harris and Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter – please come back!) show up, and we know Christina Ricci (the 90s) and more are in the cast as well, even if they’re not all in the trailer.
The special effects look legit, which is no surprise, seeing as the Wachowskis revolutionized them in the first movie, and the story seems like it’s playing on the themes of fantasy and reality, which couldn’t be more relevant in today’s world of disinformation and delusion. There are also plenty of callbacks to the first movies.
We’ll have a lot left to learn when we go down the rabbit hole this December. But this is a promising start. Keanu still knows kung-fu!
