Animals support their human counterparts in more ways than we can count. From their intuitiveness to their complete lack of judgment, pets often become our rocks during life’s most challenging moments. For the Williams family, an adorable puppy named Marvel was life-changing. Simply by being her precious self, Marvel gave 7-year-old Paxton Williams an entirely new perspective on his own life.
Marvel was born with only three paws, and as soon as her owner realized she was different from her siblings, it became clear that the tiny pup was destined to do amazing things. Marvel never let her limb difference get in the way of frolicking, playing, and exploring. She was an unshakably happy puppy, one with an important purpose.
Nearby, 7-year-old Paxton was unknowingly about to meet his new best friend. After being born extremely premature, Paxton’s right leg developed an infection that stunted its growth. Three years ago, in order to help Paxton become more mobile, his parents decided to have his stunted leg amputated in favor of a prosthetic.
Paxton is now able to walk unassisted using his prosthetic, something that allows him to be more independent. Physically, Paxton was flourishing. To help the 7-year-old approach his limb difference more positively mentally, his parents took in a pawsitive role model – Marvel, the three-pawed wonder pup.
“It gives him the opportunity to tell the kids, ‘Oh, she’s missing a paw, she’s like me,'” Paxton’s mom told People. “And like it gives him that voice, too, to advocate for himself.”
Marvel and Paxton became best friends almost immediately. “It’s like they knew they were special,” Paxton’s dad Blaine said.
There may come a time when Marvel needs additional mobility support in the form of a wheelchair, but no matter what, she’ll always have her best friend Paxton by her side.
