Siblings seem to fight for the sake of fighting, but when it really matters, they’ll step up for one another without a second thought. On a quiet mid-May day, 12-year-old Deacon Ashmore and his younger siblings played outside of their Detroit home. Seemingly out of nowhere, two stray dogs appeared – in an instant, Deacon made a potentially life-saving decision.
When one of the two dogs began to charge at the young kids, Deacon thought only of protecting his siblings. The heroic 12-year-old stepped between the quickly approaching dog and his two little sisters and little brother, encouraging them to run inside to safety.
The 6th grader “jumped in front of all the other kids and made sure they could run home really fast before the dogs got them,” Deacon’s mom told the Detroit Free Press. “But he ended up getting attacked.”
Bravely standing his ground, Deacon watched his siblings close the door as the dog bit into his leg. The dog ran off after Deacon repeatedly yelled, “Bad dog!” but the damage was done. The dog’s teeth sank all the way down to the 12-year-old’s bone, but Deacon was overcome with relief. His siblings were safe.
“He just kept saying, ‘I know Kingston [Deacon’s 5-year-old brother] wouldn’t have survived if the dogs would have attacked him,'” Deacon’s mom recalled.
Deacon’s parents rushed him to a nearby hospital where he received emergency surgery to repair his badly injured leg. Fortunately, he’s expected to make a full recovery. A member of the family’s church organized a GoFundMe to help cover the young hero’s medical costs, proud but unsurprised that he acted so bravely and selflessly.
“For him, it wasn’t a second thought,” Deacon’s mom explained. “That’s the kind of big brother he is.”
