Daughter Shares Dad’s Perfect Reaction To Her Coming Out, Sparks Wholesome Thread

For the LGBTQ+ community, the thought of coming out to your parents is often anxiety-inducing. Whether we admit it or not, we have a deeply-rooted fear of disappointing our parents, even as adults. There is still so much stigma attached to being an LGBTQ+ person that the fear of judgment or rejection is very real – fortunately, the world is filled with parents ready and waiting for an opportunity to support their kids for exactly who they are.
In a post that quickly went viral, one Twitter user named Charlotte shared her recent “coming out” story. With no time to prepare, her legend of a dad had the absolutely perfect response.
Charlotte’s post read, “came out to my parents (!) and my dad was like, oh that’s nice! i thought you were going to ask for money!”

On the surface, this response may feel somewhat dismissive. But in reality, Charlotte’s dad said everything a person needs to hear after sharing something this life-changing and proceeded to sprinkle in some dad flair for good measure.
After a significant amount of time building up the coming-out process and imagining all of the potential responses (even the absurd ones, as we all do when we’re catastrophizing), Charlotte was met with complete and total acceptance. Her dad essentially said, “oh, thank goodness you’re just coming out, I thought you were about to do something I don’t approve of, like ask for money.”
Charlotte’s dad’s response was so wholesome, the tweet accumulated nearly a million likes in less than a week. Upon finding out about his Twitter fame (and his daughter’s even more public coming out), once again, this dad was back with the perfect response.

The heartwarming post prompted others to share their own stories, adding to the wholesome as heck celebration of supportive parents (and the hilarious inner workings of the Dad Mind).
This dad has his priorities straight
My 70 year old uncle “came out” to my family a couple years ago by bringing his bf to a family vacation. My Dads reaction “I don’t give a shit who he dates as long as he’ll wake up at the crack of dawn to go look at lighthouses with your uncle so I don’t have to.”⛵️

Solid advice
One of my daughters came to me with her mother in tow, the phrase delivered was I’m confused about my sexuality my response, try it all and see which suits you, even if you don’t find out you’ll have fun searching 🤷♂️

We need a whole book of stories like this
when i came out and told my parents i liked a girl they knew, their only reaction was “why would you choose someone who wants to be a taxidermist?”
so apparently liking girls is okay, but liking a taxidermist is not— revose (@makmak_cl) January 30, 2021
Incredible
I was studying abroad in England when I felt really compelled to come out to my dad. On the phone, crying, I finally said “I’m gay.”
Dad: Oh, Daddy know for a long time. <long pause> Goddammit don’t do that to me!
Me: What??
Dad: I thought you failed a test!
So Asian.
