He was the star of Doogie Howser, M.D., a sitcom about a teenager who hadn’t hit puberty but worked as a doctor at a hospital. It was a strange show, high-concept and earnest and heartfelt and it always ended with Doogie typing the lesson he learned into his computer journal. The new version looks a little lighter and more tropical!
That’s right, they’re rebooting Doogie Howser, but to their credit, they know they are. The trailer for the new version, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., showcases the show’s new doctor, played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee. She’s a young girl in Hawaii who gets nicknamed ‘Doogie’ after the original show’s character and had to deal with the same strange mix of personal and professional struggles.
So if nothing else, the gender-flipped reboot of this weird 90s show is self-aware. We’ll see if the star has as much staying power as NPH.
