EA Sports rocked the video game world with the announcement they are resurrecting one of the most beloved sports franchises in gaming history. The gaming company simply posted “For those who never stopped believing” along with a graphic teasing the return of NCAA Football. The rebooted game will be called EA Sports College Football.

It was one of the most popular sports video games during its run, which ended in 2013 thanks to a bevy of lawsuits regarding college athletes and their likeness. EA Sports offered to compensate players for their likeness, but the NCAA is the way it is, unknowable and illogical until the end, so it never materialized. Now, with the tides shifting and the NCAA in peril, if they continue to deny players the opportunity to capitalize on their likeness, it has paved the way for franchises like NCAA Football to come roaring back.
EA Sports is partnering with CLC to develop the game, so that takes care of all the big trademark licenses for schools, stadiums, “gameday traditions” etc, etc. This still leaves the issue of the players, which, under the current situation, the game would still be unable to use. However, even a randomly generated roster playing for fans’ favorite schools would still be a massively played game.
Given the ability for users to upload their own customized rosters, and EA Sports has a pretty significant loophole to that problem. Some industry analysts expect it to be a non-issue and think the game will be able to use current player likeness once the dust settles with ongoing litigation.
“We’ve heard from the millions of passionate fans requesting the return of college football video games,” said an EA Sports spokesman “We love the energy, tradition and pageantry of college football and I am beyond thrilled to say we are back in development. We have a lot of really exciting work ahead of us, and a great team that is eager to bring a new game to players in the next couple of years.”
So one of the best EA Sports games is coming back, being re-booted and updated for next-gen consoles, bringing the iconic franchise back from the dead and into a great new era of gaming.
