Ernie Johnson has been a great NBA studio host but wow his real career should be inspirational speaking. He gave a powerful speech to the University of Alabama football team at the request of legendary coach Nick Saban and it will be the best thing you watch today.
He opens with some standard fare about how he has a “get-to job and not a “got-to” job. He talks about how the players have that same position, and not to take that for granted. Then the speech takes an emotional turn when he talks about his son. Johnson’s son Michael is adopted from Romania and had muscular dystrophy. He said the nurse handed “this boy to (my wife) and said ‘don’t take this boy, he’s no good.’ Can you imagine? And I said bring him home,” Johnson said.
“How am I going to make somebody else’s life better today?”

Johnaon spoke about how important it was to find value in everyone. He said his son’s high school basketball coach found value in him, even though Michael requires a wheelchair and struggles to move and communicate. He found value in how Michael could help teach the team to give maximum effort and have a heart for others. Michael’s favorite phrase to sign, “I love you” , was taught by the coach to the other kids.
Ernie said he could truly see the impact his son had on senior night, when he was honored.
“… I look up in the student section and they’re standing, signing ‘I love you too’ because this kid, this Romanian orphan and this coach from Indiana somehow got together in a gym in Braselton, Georgia, and taught this huge school about love,” he said.
“Remember: ‘Don’t take this boy, he’s no good.’ Right. Value in everybody. When you step away from your agenda and notice there are moments that can make somebody’s life better … be a better human. How you gonna do it?”
What an incredible speech with a powerful message. Watching the video is a great break from your normal internet diet and will leave you wanting to make the world a better place.
