It’s been a while since we finally learned the identity of Ted Mosby’s baby mama. It took How I Met Your Mother 9 seasons and countless fake outs – including the final one that infuriated fans – before they tried to have their cake and eat it too. Nobody much liked the finale, but satisfactorily ending a show that had been building towards a specific endgame for years is not easy. Just ask Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. Or Benioff and Weiss.
Now that Hulu is spinning HIMYM off into a gender-swapped series that follows Hilary Duff on a quest to meet her kids’ father, show creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger will have a chance to beat the original sitcom’s ending.
The general premise of the show is the same – a single twentysomething navigates life in New York City with a collection of friends all on the hunt for The One. (Hopefully, Duff’s character will be a little less desperate about the whole thing.)
We don’t yet know who – if anyone – will play the future version of Duff’s character, narrating the show’s stories to her future children, how the show will weather the modern era of dating apps, or who will be the breakout character, a la Neil Patrick Harris’ legen-wait for it-dary Barney Stinson. But we know who makes up the cast, and now we’ve got our first image of the ensemble.
Earlier this week on Instagram, Duff posted a shot of herself and her costars on the set of the (so far) 10-episode Hulu series, captioned: “Who’s ready for us??? We may or may not have been sitting in front of a certain someones apartment…. #himyf.”

The original show’s creators – and new show’s executive producers – Carter Bays and Craig Thomas released a statement making it clear that the cast isn’t the only ones excited about How I Met Your Father.
“Kids, I’m going to tell you an incredible story: It’s the story of how two writers got lucky enough to make their dream TV show for nine seasons and now get to pass the torch to an inspired new creative team with their own incredible story to tell, the story of How I Met Your Father,” Bays and Thomas said in a statement. “We are honored by their passion and vision, and look forward to helping them tell a legendary new story. (Thanks to all the HIMYM fans out there who waited for it.)”
We’re curious to see if they’ll pull this off. Or if someone is gonna need to celebrate Slapsgiving!
