It’s always cool when a famous person turns out to be an actually decent human being. And few seem cooler than Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. For evidence, I’d submit (among many things) that the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Famer is currently locked into a (virtual) drum battle with a 10-year-old kid.
Of course, we’re gonna go hard for Dave Grohl here. The former Nirvana drummer has gone on record as claiming the Foo Fighters as Dad rock. How can you not like a guy that readily embraces the “not cool” mantle and is someone who will even bring his daughter on stage to jam during a concert?
So when 10-year-old music prodigy Nandi Bushell threw down the gauntlet, we all knew where this was headed.
“My dream is to one day jam with Dave Grohl, @taylorhawkins and all the @foofighters!” she wrote on Twitter. “Mr Grohl I would love to have a drum battle with you! I LOVE Everlong it’s really hard to play as it’s so fast but so much FUN!”

A note about Bushell here. She is, by all indications, an incredible musician. Not incredible for a 10-year-old, but just straight awesome. She kills it on a variety of different instruments (check out her YouTube for proof, as she has more than 100k followers). I think it’s pretty clear how hard she ruled in this, as it quickly cleared 2 million views.
And when someone brings it that hard, the challenge demands satisfaction, so of course, Dave Grohl accepted.
“I haven’t played that song since the day I’ve recorded it in 1997,” said Grohl in his response after playing “Everlong.” “Nandi, in the last week, I’ve gotten at least 100 texts from people all over the world saying, ‘This girl is challenging you to a drum-off. What are you going to do?'”
“You’re an incredible drummer,” he continued. “And I’m really flattered that you’ve picked some of my songs to do for your videos and you’ve done them all perfectly.”
He then challenged her to play “Dead End Friends” by Them Crooked Vultures and played it on his daughter’s drumset. He signed off his tweet with a “Your move! Your friend in Rock, Dave.”
Haven’t played these songs in a loooooong time…..thanks for the inspiration!!!

Nandi was floored that he accepted the challenge.
“This is UNREAL! I can’t believe Dave Grohl actually accepted my drum battle, Thank You! Now it’s my turn to learn ‘dead end friends’! I am going to checkmate this one too. Thank you Harper for lending your Dad the kit!” she wrote in her tweet along with her reaction video.

We have not seen the end of the epic virtual drum battle, and for that, we should all be thankful, because it’s always cool when fun things happen on the internet in 2020.
