In comparison to other Marvel characters, The Guardians of the Galaxy were relatively unknown to the masses. Sure, they had their share of comic fans before, but it wasn’t until 2014 when James Gunn and Marvel Studios released the first film that turned this band of misfits into a household name. If you’re like me and can’t get enough of these guys, you’ll have the chance to jump into the shoes of Star-Lord this October in the upcoming game from developer Eidos Montreal & Square Enix.
Just judging by the trailer alone, they’ve really nailed the Guardians’ personalities. The banter between them feels great and right at home with anyone familiar with the films. No real plot details are given to us, but I can only assume we’re going to screw up a lot while in the process of trying to save the galaxy. Isn’t that how it always goes?
Unlike The Avengers game that released in 2020, where multiplayer was integrated into the whole experience, Guardians of the Galaxy will be single-player-only. You’ll also only be able to play as Star-Lord, and have to make certain choices throughout that will have an effect on where the story will go next. Making tough calls like “should Drax toss Rocket across that ravine?” will actually change how the characters feel about you. You’ll only have seconds to choose, so tread carefully. Do you really want to piss off the space raccoon?
While you won’t get to control the other characters directly, through on-screen commands you can make Drax, Groot, Gamora & Rocket pull off attacks and combos. I would have loved to be able to play as Rocket and fly around, but that’s just not in the cards with this one. I just hope Mantis joins the team at some point. When asked how important the side characters are, Executive Narrative Director Mary DeMarle said “I’m the kind of person who doesn’t want to go to the movies and know what I’m seeing before I go. But I will say that Mantis is my favorite character in this entire game. You know Mantis from the movies, but then if you dive into the comic books, you’ll see a completely different interpretation of Mantis. And we’ve found our spin on her that I think is unique.”
Guardians of the Galaxy is available for pre-order right now and there are two different versions.
The Digital Deluxe Edition includes:

The Physical Cosmic Deluxe Edition includes all of that, but it comes with a SteelBook Case and the Mini Artbook is a hardback instead.
I was one of the few that actually enjoyed The Avengers game for what it was. Sure, it had a rough launch, but it has really turned itself around since then. While it might share some similarities in regards to the combat, Guardians of the Galaxy looks fresh and it’s coming from a different developer. Here’s hoping it really nails the landing when it launches later this year.
Guardians of the Galaxy will release for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X & PC on October 26th, 2021
