July 4th weekend just got some fireworks courtesy of Disney+.
As soon as the quarantine hit, movie and tv studios have been doing what they can to help people survive their lockdowns by providing us with as much content as we can handle. Many of them have been releasing movies to streaming platforms when they were supposed to only be in theaters.
Disney has been at the forefront of this, releasing the Pixar movie Upward to Disney+, putting Frozen 2 on their platform before it was meant to be available at home, and now they’re dropping what has to be one of the most anticipated pieces of entertainment of the last decade onto streaming more than a year early.
On Tuesday morning, Disney announced that they’d be releasing a filmed version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway sensation and 11-time-Tony Award®-, GRAMMY Award®-, Olivier Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning Hamilton on Disney+ on July 3rd.
Surprise! The original Broadway production of Hamilton, filmed LIVE onstage at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, is now coming exclusively to #DisneyPlus this July 3rd. Shout it to the rooftops! #Hamilfilm pic.twitter.com/4FK4lZhcO6

“No other artistic work in the last decade has had the cultural impact of ‘Hamilton’—an inspiring and captivating tale told and performed in a powerfully creative way. In light of the extraordinary challenges facing our world, this story about leadership, tenacity, hope, love and the power of people to unite against the forces of adversity is both relevant and impactful,” said Robert A. Iger, Executive Chairman of The Walt Disney Company. “We are thrilled to bring this phenomenon to Disney+ on the eve of Independence Day, and we have the brilliant Lin-Manuel Miranda and the team behind ‘Hamilton’ to thank for allowing us to do so more than a year before planned.”
This isn’t a film version of the musical but is instead a filmed version of the stage play, which was captured in June of 2016 and features the original cast.
“I’m so proud of how beautifully Tommy Kail has brought ‘Hamilton’ to the screen. He’s given everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house,” said Lin-Manuel Miranda. “I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4th weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it.”
If you are one of the countless people who’ve been unable to snag tickets during the musical’s run on Broadway in NYC and in various cities across the country, this is more than good enough. Especially since it wasn’t planned to premiere for another 15 months.
Come July 3rd, you’ll no longer have to wait for it.
You can sign up for Disney+ for $6.99/month or $69.99/year.
