After having kids, your priorities shift so abruptly it’s difficult to remember the way you lived before. Things you previously valued no longer seem as important, while your new role as Dad immediately takes center stage. Looking into those trusting eyes, you make a promise: you will always love them, you will always support them, and you will always protect them.
The promises you make as a new dad aren’t always made consciously. The unwavering determination to love and protect your child is a force so strong that it often lives beyond your awareness, driving your decisions from a place that can’t be articulated. When David Espinoza was faced with a situation that forced him to do the unfathomable, his dad reflexes took over.
Every morning, David and his 5-year-old son Aiden walked to their local park to spend some quality time together. But on May 28, the unthinkable happened. An oncoming car failed to stop, striking the dedicated father. In the split second before impact, David pushed his young son out of the car’s path.
“It doesn’t surprise me at all,” David’s mom Trinity told AZ Family. “If you knew him as a father and how devoted he is to his family, how much he loves his son, it wouldn’t surprise you at all.”
David Espinoza was rushed to the hospital immediately following the incident. He suffered multiple injuries including a fractured skull and broken ankles, and he remains in a coma as he fights for his life.
“David would gladly take what he’s going through right now if he knew for sure that Aiden was safe,” Trinity explained.
