Medical procedures can often be one of the most stressful experiences in our lives.
Beyond the actual ailment or injury, time spent in the hospital or making constant trips to the doctor’s office can also take a toll.
Now imagine you’re a child or the family of a little one needing serious surgery or medical treatment.
Unassured simply by the years of experience those around you may have, they are still strangers in a very sterile and unfamiliar place.
Decisions are made as you and your child are shuttled around what seems like endless hallways and corridors, frequently with little knowledge of where you’re headed to next.
However, one California hospital is helping to put kids in the driver’s seat… literally.
Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, California had an idea to make their pediatric surgical patients’ most stressful journey a little bit easier.
Yep. That’s a Benz. Tricked out with its very own MP3 player to boot.
If that’s not your cup of tea, they also have a pretty sweet pink VW Beetle which was donated by a staff member earlier this year.
It’s all part of an effort at hospitals around the country to help alleviate some of the anxiety that all too often accompanies a serious medical procedure.
“Check it out! Doctors Medical Center has made another addition to our pediatric surgical program. Last year, we introduced our little black Mercedes. Now we have a pink Volkswagen Beetle! These sweet rides take our smallest patients to the operating room. The goal is to reduce anxiety and stress, and make the experience less scary for everyone involved. Doesn’t hurt to have options, right?” the hospital announced via their Facebook page.
Patients are given the keys to their adorable one-seater prior to surgery. They’re given chance to drive them around to relieve anxiety and likely to give them some feeling of control in an otherwise very strict and highly regimented environment.
While the approach is still relatively new, the smiles on these little patient’s faces as they enter the operating room speak volumes as to its success.
Several other hospitals and pediatric treatment centers including Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester, NY have implemented similar programs.
Regardless of your age, hospitals can be a scary place – that is until you realize that miracles happen there every day.
