The adaptation of the classic SEGA Genesis game Sonic the Hedgehog into a Hollywood movie didn’t exactly get off to a great start. The studio’s first attempt at animating the beloved character caused outrage among fans, and in an act of fan service that actually made sense, they went back and reimagined Sonic’s visual look. The result was a much more appealing hedgehog, and the first movie went on to be very successful.
Now they’re back with part two, and it’s more of the same, emphasis on more. Jean-Ralphio, I mean Ben Schwartz, is back as the voice of Sonic, James Marsden is back as his human foil, Jim Carrey is back as the cartoonish Dr. Robotnik. But the sequel has added a few new characters to the mix, including Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna and Colleen O’Shaughnessy – the one video game actor who is carrying over into the movie – as Sonics beloved sidekick Tails.
The films official synopsis highlights the hunt for the chaos emeralds:
The world’s favorite blue hedgehog is back for a next-level adventure in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2. After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
