A dog owner in Florida proved that while dogs are thought to be man’s best friend, the feeling is mutual, after jumping into a pond to wrestle his pup from the jaws of an alligator. The term “Florida man” usually gets used in a humiliating story involving horrible self-owns or one-man blooper reels. But Mike McCoy changed that when he became a “Florida Man” whose quick-thinking heroics saved his dog’s life.
McCoy was walking his 8-month-old lab when an alligator leaped from a nearby pond and snatched the poor dog instantly. A nurse at the nearby school saw what happened, saying the gator darted from the water like a snake. Even more surprising was seeing McCoy jump in after the gator.
“I thumbed him in the eye, picked him out of the water so he couldn’t get anywhere until he let the dog go,” McCoy told a local TV station. “He decided, I don’t have him, so I’ll bite you.” The dog and owner both required stitches, but thankfully the school nurse was quick to the scene to help aid the duo.
McCoy said there was “no hesitation” about jumping in, and that it just “is what it is”. That’s a term you use to nonchalantly brush off getting a slightly wrong order at lunch, not to describe the day you JUMPED INTO A POND TO FIGHT AN ALLIGATOR TO SAVE YOUR PUPPY.
“No second thoughts. Can’t. You don’t have time. It’s a parent instinct. But I’m glad I have it because I wouldn’t have him.”
Truly wild stuff. Authorities say they are working with a trapper to get the 8-foot gator (Editor’s note: 8-FOOT?! Sweet Christmas.) out of the water, and that attacks like this are rare. What they should do is just let this superhero dog owner finish the job.
