Everyone seems to think their childhood was the golden age of TV, and as a kid who took full advantage of every sick day, I’m no exception. Feverish days were spent on the couch, alternating between Disney and Jerry Springer – the ultimate ‘90s cocktail. One show in particular temporarily pulled me away from the chants of “JERRY! JERRY!” long enough to absorb some wholesome life lessons. Though The Proud Family wasn’t the biggest name in kids TV, for four wonderful years, it enriched Disney’s already top-notch programming. Thanks to Disney+, The Proud Family is making its long-awaited return in 2022.
Disney has a habit of cranking out instant classics, dominating their competition in both movies and TV shows. They know how to create characters that kids will relate to, like 14-year-old Penny Proud. Penny faced the challenges of growing up head-on, and Disney didn’t shy away from showing the very real peer pressure teens face. Penny was smart and talented, but like most kids, she made her fair share of mistakes.
Aside from being wholesome as heck and wildly entertaining, The Proud Family made history as the first Disney show to star a Black character. In the Disney+ reboot, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, a surprising number of the original voice actors are returning to the recording studio to reprise their roles. Kyla Pratt will once again step into Penny’s precocious shoes, and Tommy Davidson will give life to the lovable but highly embarrassing Oscar Proud (Penny’s dad).
More than six other main characters are returning as well, including Soleil Moon Frye as Zoey Howze, and Cedric the Entertainer as Uncle Bobby Proud. The award-winning production team is more than ready to get the Proud family back together, with creator/executive producer Bruce W. Smith and executive producer Ralph Farquhar leading the charge.
“In our minds, the show never really went away, as we still had tons of stories left to tell,” Smith and Farquhar said in a press release. “It’s the perfect time to bring back this show, and we can’t wait to take fans, old and new alike, on this journey with us.”
Look out for The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder on Disney+ in 2022, with an impressive list of guest stars adding, even more, to be excited about. Lizzo, Lil Nas X, Chance the Rapper, and Jane Lynch are just some of the many celebrities lending their voices to the reboot. Oh, and fortunately, the same theme song that still occasionally gets stuck in my head will kick off the new episodes as well. It’s still a banger.
