There’s one thing you can always count on when a new superhero movie trailer comes out: fans will obsess over it.
This is especially true about Batman movies, particularly when it’s the start of a new take on the Bat, with a new director, a new actor, and a new feel. Over the weekend, the trailer for Matt Reeves’ The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, took the internet by storm when it was released during the DC FanDome event. The two-minute trailer gave fans a lot to chew on, from the use of a Nirvana song to R Patz’s emo-hair, to Colin Farrel’s intense prosthetics, and more.
Every time a new director gets his hands on the comics’ most famous vigilante, fans salivate over the new approach. The response to the first look at The Batman is proving no different, and the filmmakers seem to be inviting it.
Some things remain the same. The Batman is tortured, the tone is grim, Gotham is a shithole. Familiar faces abound, including The Penguin and Catwoman before they’ve fully embraced their supervillain personas, and The Riddler, who seems to be center stage, and is a far cry from Jim Carrey’s portrayal.
Paul Dano is playing one of Batman’s most famous supervillains, and this take seems just as dark as the movie he’s featured in. The few glimpses we get of the villain in the trailer look nothing like the green-spandexed trickster from the old TV show; he has more in common with one of the serial killers in Netflix’s Mindhunter. Which makes sense, with the new plot supposedly featuring Batman’s legendary detective skills.
Facing off against a villain who loves riddles, he’ll need his wits about him. Or else a Twitter account, where a fan has already cracked one of the Riddler’s codes.
In the trailer, a card is addressed to Batman, and inside it is a riddle, duh, that is answered with a cipher code that needs to be broken to be read. The riddle says: What does a liar do when he’s dead? A couple of clever fans broke the code and tweeted exactly how they did it.

In the new #TheBatmanTrailer, the Riddler leaves a card with the question “What does a liar do when he’s dead?” I could just solve it like a riddle (and did), but it’s a good opportunity to show how to solve a puzzle by brute force, so you’re sure of the answer. The answer to the riddle, as they figured out, is “He still lies.”
The Riddler seems to be hung up on corruption and lies inside the Gotham PD, and based on the final lines of the trailer, he thinks Batman – or perhaps Bruce Wayne – is involved as well. Or perhaps he wants the Bat’s help in rooting out said corruption. They’ve only shot 25% of the movie, they maybe they don’t even know. But here’s hoping The Riddler has some riddles up his sleeves that are slightly more sophisticated than the one in the trailer.
No offense to the twitter code-breaker, but if he could do it, it surely wasn’t too hard for The World’s Greatest Detective.
