It’s going to be much smarter than you
Robots may not be ready to take over just yet, but that doesn’t mean they won’t eventually. In fact, according to some prominent scientists, artificial intelligence is just over the horizon, and when it gets here, there’s not going to be much we can do to stop it.
In fact, if we want to survive, we’re going to have to join with it. Gulp.
Elon Musk, the man responsible for the launch of the Falcon Heavy earlier this month, previously made the claim that man was eventually going to need to “merge” with artificial intelligence, and now another expert is echoing his statements.
Speaking on a CNBC panel at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Ian Pearson, a futurist at Futurizon, reiterated Musk’s ideas, and got specific about AI’s level af advancement.
“The fact is that AI can go further than humans, it could be billions of times smarter than humans at this point,” Pearson told the crowd. “So we really do need to make sure that we have some means of keeping up.”
How do we keep up? By becoming cyborgs, Pearson said. “The way to protect against that is to link that AI to your brain so you have the same IQ… as the computer. I don’t actually think it’s safe, just like Elon Musk… to develop these superhuman computers until we have a direct link to the human brain… and then don’t get way ahead.”
Basically if we don’t want to be used as batteries to power The Matrix, we need to link up with AI before it’s too smart for us.
It was at this very same conference last year that Musk posited the same idea. “Over time, I think we will probably see a closer merger of biological intelligence and digital intelligence.” He has since put his money where his mouth is, launching a company called Neuralink that aims to create that merger.
We wrote about the next stages of human evolution, and this cyborg or bionic train-of-thought seems to be something of a consensus. So perhaps it’s inevitable.
I just hope when it happens, they include those awesome Six Million Dollar Man sound effects!
