Plenty of directors have favorite actors with whom they like to work over and over again. Hitchcock had Jimmy Stewart, Scorsese has DeNiro and DiCaprio, and James Gunn has Michael Rooker and… Sylvester Stallone?
Gunn, who directed the MCU’s first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies (and will be back for the third) before helming the forthcoming Suicide Squad sequel for DC, showcased Stallone in a poignant role in the first Guardians sequel, and now it appears he’ll be joining his director in crossing over to DC for the new Suicide Squad movie. Stallone recently knocked out the robot from Rocky 4 so he’s clearly ready for a new opponent.
The pair was featured on Gunn’s Instagram account, where he shared a post of the two of them and praised the 80s megastar, move famous for his roles as Rocky Balboa and Rambo, for his acting skills.

Apparently, those skills will be put to use in Suicide Squad 2, though we don’t get know what role Stallone will be playing. The cast is already stacked with an almost entirely new lineup of off-beat mercenaries teaming up in what looks to be a significantly off-kilter entry into the superhero genre. Stallone’s addition only ups the ante on the potential weirdness factor.
Stallone confirmed his participation in the movie, posting on his Instagram: “Working with this incredible Director on this astounding project has made this an amazing year. I am a very lucky man to be surrounded by such talent.”
He joins Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, and more, and Gunn only knows how the action star will fit in with this motley crew. But if it’s anything like the director’s other superhero flicks, it’s sure to be fun!
