If you’ve read anything by me before, you’ve probably noticed how bored I am by Hollywood’s constant reboots and remakes and reimaginings. Most of them are garbage, boring retreads, or woke tweaks to material that doesn’t deserve or doesn’t need to be refreshed. But there are a few exceptions that actually imbued their money grabs with something new, and found a clever way to bring back an old favorite.
One of those exceptions is Netflix’s (formerly YouTube’s) Cobra Kai, the popular TV show sequel to the Karate Kid franchise that dominated my childhood. The movies got stale about halfway through the second one, but the first remains a classic and the third is straight-up hilarious. The TV show brought back Johnny and Daniel-san, but put the focus on Johnny’s perspective, allowing his character to be fleshed out and redeemed, and introduced a new generation of students to be molded, and corrupted, by their senseis, including the evil Sensei Kreese.
We already know that season 4 is coming before the end of the year and that Kreese’s old Vietnam buddy Terry Silver is joining him to take on Johnny and Daniel’s newly united dojo at the All Valley tournament, where the crane kick debuted at the end of the original movie.
Netflix just dropped a promo – not for the show as much as for the All-Valley Tournament itself, and while there isn’t much in the way of footage or plot teases, simply putting the tourney front and center and reminding us of the players gets the job done.
Check it out, and get pumped for season 4 of Cobra Kai!
