One of the best forms of internet content is when hardworking, everyday people get recognized for their legacy of hard work with a grand gesture. It’s a home run every time, as was the case for a longtime beloved high school custodian who had recently lost his car and suffered an injury. He’d been forced to walk to work, but those days are behind him after a colleague surprised him with a big gift; a new car.
The school shared the emotional video of Samuel James getting surprised with the new wheels.
“We at Citronelle High wanted to help him out and get him back on his feet. Thank you Sam for all your years of service and for keeping our athletic facilities and our grounds in great shape! #WildcatNation #peoplemattermost”
James was overcome with emotion at the news that an English teacher at the school, Deborah Pippin, was giving him the Toyota SUV.
Pippin told a local media outlet her family had recently purchased a new car and wanted to make sure the SUV went to someone who really needed it.
“I just can’t think of somebody better to be able to give it to, and it’s going to be very special to see him have it,” she said.
James said he’s known the family for years and that he’s so thankful for them.
“I’m just thankful that the lord sent them my way and let me get this right here,” he said. “And I’m blessed to have this, and blessed to have them as real good friends.”
Custodian is a position that can be overlooked, but it’s easy to see what a difference James has made, just based off the high opinion his coworkers and the students have of him. The video was shared more than a thousand times and hundreds left comments, including former students who praised his “awesome soul” and how much he did to put a smile on the faces of everyone.
In short, he’s a person who deserves a break, and the community he cared for was there for him when he needed it.
