Finding a missing animal is exceedingly difficult. When your beloved pet ends up outside of their comfortable home, they’re surrounded by unfamiliar sounds, sights, and smells. Unfortunately, fear of their new environment can push their instincts to kick in. Rather than wandering back home, they may wander into the most secluded places they can find in search of safety. For a 1-year-old cat named Flea, the pursuit of protection led to a dangerous situation when the terrified cat became trapped in a well.
Flea’s owners Freya Hill and her sister Keira were devastated when their young cat disappeared from their Loddington, Northamptonshire home. Flea is extraordinarily friendly, seeking attention from strangers rather than fearing them. Because of her boldness, her owners feared that she may have accidentally wandered a little too far with a cat-loving stranger.
“She does have a habit of jumping into cars and wanting to go for a walk. She is just over-friendly with people and will follow them,” Freya told BBC News.
The curious cat was closer than anyone realized, never having left her own neighborhood. Flea, however, had a 20-foot obstacle separating her from the safety of her home – the small black cat was stuck at the bottom of a well.
Terrified and alone, Flea wailed from 20 feet below ground, hoping someone would hear her. And thankfully, someone did. A local dog heard the cat’s cries and went full Lassie, alerting neighbors who quickly contacted Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service.
“The well was under approximately 1ft of water, but the cat had managed to climb onto a small ledge,” the rescue workers wrote on Facebook. “Flea was enticed off the ledge using cat food and was brought to the surface and handed back safely to its owners.”
After being checked over by a vet, Flea received a clean bill of health. She was hungry, cold, and exhausted, but otherwise unharmed.
“She’s definitely trying to use up one of her nine lives,” said Freya. “I’m so grateful and thankful to the firefighters who all carried out such a brilliant and amazing job.”
