The nostalgia is strong with this rumor (if it’s true). There has been mention recently that we could see Game Boy and Game Boy Color games releasing for Nintendo Switch Online. This means we won’t have to sit underneath a lamp anymore to be able to see the games we’re playing. Woo hoo!
In a new episode on the Nate the Hate podcast, insider and (according to his track record) credible leaker NateDrake refers to a 2019 Nintendo data mine. In this data mine, four emulators for the Nintendo Switch’s NES app were discovered. Drake says he believes that one of those emulators is for Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles. The insider claims that their sources say an announcement is “coming soon”, and sources for Nintendo Life have also backed up that claim. Nintendo Life claims that their own sources are saying both systems will be arriving “really soon.”, but they were far less optimistic that Game Boy Advance games would be coming to Switch Online. Of course, this is all just hearsay, but man I hope it’s true.
Nintendo Switch Online has the potential to be something really awesome, but it’s not quite there yet. Adding more classic games to the mix could be a step in the right direction, but it’s kind of sad when you think about it. The Wii U was released back in 2012 and its Virtual Console had everything from N64 to Game Boy Advance titles to purchase. It’s now 2021 and the Nintendo Switch is drip-feeding us these games. There are so many classics I’d love to be able to play on the go. The Game Boy has an extensive library of games as well, but currently, the only way to access what’s available is on a Nintendo DS. Being able to play them on Nintendo Switch with the option to use save states would be a thing of beauty.
While something like this would be awesome, it is just a rumor. Honestly, though it’s not really that farfetched. I could see Nintendo doing something like this and I’m all for it. I could also see them releasing a “Game Boy Classic” or something for $100 and I’d end up buying it because Nintendo knows how to weaponize my nostalgia and use it against me.
