Strap yourselves in folks, there’s a lot to unpack here.
Back in 2014, you might recall hearing about a little game called P.T. on PS4. If you played this “playable teaser”, you might also recall screaming out in sheer terror while playing it (or maybe that was just me). For a short demo that involved you walking down an endless hallway in first-person, it was extremely effective and actually contained a lot of plot that teased a new direction for the Silent Hill franchise from acclaimed game developer Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear). Unfortunately, this new game called ‘Silent Hills’ would never see the light of day. At least, that’s what we thought.
In the latest string of reports involving a next-gen Silent Hill title, this new rumor comes courtesy of Gematsu. Their sources claim that “a new Silent Hill is in development” at Kojima Productions. What’s even crazier is that it’s apparently being funded by Sony Interactive Entertainment, which means it will be a PS5 exclusive. Along with the claims that Kojima is involved with a new Silent Hill, there are rumors surrounding Konami and the revival of its iconic franchises (more on that shortly).
Now, before we get all hyped up, the big red flag with this Silent Hill news is Kojima and Konami had a falling out back in 2015. This meant ‘Silent Hills’ was canceled and would just forever be known as P.T. (Konami would even remove P.T. from the PS store to really seal its fate). Legions of fans have hoped that this Kojima-directed Silent Hill would get picked back up again one day. Adding fuel to this growing fire, a PS5 exclusive title ‘Abandoned’ was announced last year and would get a ton of traction on the internet as everyone claimed it was actually secretly a Silent Hill game. Kojima would deny this, saying he had no involvement in the project. Despite that, he flat out denied he was working on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and later would announce he was making Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. What can I say, the man loves to play with our emotions, so he can’t be trusted!
Along with that bombshell, a new report from VGC claims that there are in fact new games and even remasters being developed for Metal Gear, Castlevania, and Silent Hill. The first of these titles will be a new Castlevania game, which their sources described as a “reimagining” of the series that’s currently in development internally at Konami.
The report also mentions that Bluepoint, the studio behind the Demon’s Souls PS5 remake, could be working on a remake of the original Metal Gear Solid. Eurogamer has corroborated this report, stating that Konami has mulled over a Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake for some time. This is interesting because Bluepoint, the studio behind the Demon’s Souls PS5 remake, was just purchased by Sony. However, VGC was told the series is actually being worked on by an external studio, Virtuos. Recently, Virtuos worked on the Switch ports of Dark Souls Remastered, The Outer Worlds, and The BioShock Collection, so it might make sense, but why not go with Bluepoint who is familiar with the tech? Maybe they’re both working on remakes?
Of course, these are all just rumors, but man is it a lot to take in. Could you imagine a Metal Gear Solid remake on PS5? The long-awaited Kojima Silent Hill project turning out to be true? I’m sure many people would be pleased.
