A little ways back, before Spotlight and Birdman and Spider-man: Homecoming, Michael Keaton had sort of slipped away from Hollywood. The former Batman was a huge star in the 80s and 90s but he took a step back. When he returned, he did so with a bang, appearing in blockbusters and Oscar winners, nabbing his own awards and nominations in the process. And he’s not done.
Last month, Keaton confirmed that his Vulture would be back in the MCU, one way or another, and next year he’ll appear in The Flash as the character he relaunched for modern audiences with Tim Burton’s Batman. Now we’ve learned that Keaton will continue playing the Dark Knight for DC, as Warner Bros. released an updated cast list for their forthcoming HBO Max movie Batgirl.
This isn’t a huge surprise. It was hinted that Batgirl would feature Batman, we just didn’t know which one. DC currently has three appearing in 2022 films – Keaton’s, Affleck’s, and Robert Pattinson’s. But we didn’t know which. Now, Cinelinx reports that the WB has let the cat out of the bag in regards to who “the real Batman” truly is.
Batgirl is being directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilal Fallah for release on HBO Max in 2022, though no official date has been set. Keaton joins Leslie Grace is Batgirl, aka Barbara Gordon, J.K. Simmons (also reprising a previous role) as Commissioner Gordon, and Brendan Fraser as the bad guy (presumably Firefly). How and if Keaton will interact with any of them is yet to be seen, but he’s bolstering an already solid cast.
Keaton has significant roles in both the DC and Marvel movie universes, which is good news for fans of both. But it might make things tricky for the two comic book worlds to have that epic crossover event we’d all love to see!
