The New Kids on the Block announced a new tour, and no we didn’t get sucked into some sort of time portal sending us back to 1993. The NKOTB MixTape Tour is hitting the road for a whopping 50 cities and some of the band’s BFFs from the 1980s and 1990s are along for the ride. The not-so-new kids will be joined on the tour by Salt-N-Pepa, En Vogue, and the one and only Rick Astley. This will be a thrilling chance for people under the age of 40 to be able to see “the guy from that one meme!”
The former boy band (I think by this point we have to call it a man band, right?) went on tour in 2019 with Tiffany and Naughty by Nature. The 2022 version is even bigger. “We had a blast out on the first MixTape Tour in 2019, and can’t wait to take it to another level with our fans on the MixTape Tour 2022,” Donnie Wahlberg said in a statement. “Just like a mixtape, these shows are going to take audiences through all the emotions. To be able to have Salt-N-Pepa come back and now also have the iconic and legendary Rick Astley & En Vogue join the tour…we could not be more excited. Let’s GO!”
“Let’s GO!” is the chief hype phrase of the 2020s, even if it still feels jarring to see it in a press statement. But those 80s and 90s kids definitely WILL go because few things sell as reliably as nostalgia. There’s a reason we get the same Star Wars movies every few decades. Anything good (Rocky/Karate Kid/Boy Meets World/Fresh Prince/21 Jump Street/One Million Other Things) are continually rebooted and repackaged to great success, so this tour will probably be huge.
Most of the MixTape Tour crew appeared on Kelly Clarkson’s show for a little preview/throwback of what’s coming to a city probably near you.
The tour starts in May in Cincinnati, and you can find dates on the Live Nation website.
Getting that confetti ready because we’re coming to a stage near you in 2022!! 🎉 We’re bringin’ our friends @TheSaltNPepa, @rickastley and @EnVogueMusic along for the ride!
