It’s a big day for remakes of 90s classics. Or for reboots. Or sequels. I barely even know what’s what anymore.
This morning, the first trailer for Disney+’s new Home Alone movie, Home Sweet Home Alone, landed, and it looks like a beat-by-beat recreation of the first movie, just with a new cast. And perhaps some of the old cast, if a cameo from a grown-up Buzz counts. Now we’ve got the first trailer for Scream 5 (it’s just being called Scream), a new version of another classic flick that had a bunch of sequels with diminishing returns and is now being recycled. This new Scream features the old guard – including Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette – along with some new cast members to keep things fresh.
Unlike the Home Alone trailer that makes it clear that you’re getting the same movie again, the new Scream looks a little different – and not just because there’s texting. The cast of the original is pulled back in when a new Ghostface emerges and seems to be targeting kids related to the original killers, so Sydney and friends, who’ve obviously been through this a few times, try to give them a hand.
So it’s definitely more of a sequel than a straight remake, though if it does well they’ll surely hand the reins over to the younger cast, should they survive! Unfortunately, it looks like this new version is lacking the laughs and the clever “we’re in a horror movie” approach that made the original so groundbreaking. At least there’s none of that in the trailer.
Watch that trailer now, and see the new Scream in theaters next year:
