I think we can all admit we were pretty shocked to find out who the voice cast was for the upcoming animated Super Mario Bros. film. Chris Pratt voicing Mario was met with some harsh criticism, but I think what was an even bigger surprise was finding out Donkey Kong was going to make an appearance in the movie, and Seth Rogen of all actors would be providing the voice for the ape. I know the Italian plumber has a history with DK, but their games are usually separate (outside of Mario Kart and Smash Bros.). Why include DK in a Mario movie? Well, with this latest info leak, the bigger picture is starting to become a bit clearer. It looks like we’re getting our very own animated “Nintendo Cinematic Universe”.
As reported by Giant Freakin Robot, Seth Rogen will apparently be starring in a solo Donkey Kong film. The DK film will reportedly release after the Mario Bros. one and… that’s about where the sources info ends. It’s all still extremely early (the Mario movie doesn’t come until December 2022) and the source couldn’t confirm if Cranky Kong (voiced by Fred Armisen) or any other characters would make an appearance in the DK film. I’m pretty sure that Cranky is a guarantee though since the old geezer is showing up in the Mario Bros. movie.
With a solo DK film potentially in the works, that could mean we’re going to see the likes of Diddy Kong, Funky Kong, Dixie Kong, and even King K. Rool on the big screen. I was a pretty big fan of the Donkey Kong Country animated series that ran on Teletoon from 1996-2000, but that was a long, long time ago. I feel like DK is long overdue for another appearance outside of his video games. This DK film could be a great chance to introduce a younger generation to the character as well.
What’s really cool about all this though is if this is true, it really opens up the opportunity for Illumination to explore other Nintendo franchises like The Legend of Zelda and Star Fox. Clearly, Nintendo must love how they’re handling the Mario Bros. movie, so if this relationship between both Illumination and Nintendo continues, this could become something big. I’m just envisioning a build-up to an Avenger’s level threat that means all the Nintendo movie characters come together in some kind of epic Smash Bros. movie or something. I’d be down to watch that.
