The creator of the wildly popular Pokemon Go is working on a new game featuring our favorite race of shape-shifting car aliens. Hasbro, Tomy and Niantic announced the new mobile AR multiplayer game, Transformers: Heavy Metal.
Pokemon Go was astoundingly successful. You’d see herds of kids and adults in parks or roaming their neighborhoods with phones and tablets on hand to find digital versions of the little guys. The Transformers version could be even bigger, as the IP is certainly more popular with kids (and more importantly: their dads who grew up with the toys). The movies also did big business, so you’d hope an immersive AR Transformers game would be the shit.

According to the press release, players will be joining “The Guardian Network,” a group of humans who band together with the Autobats in the war against the Decepticons. Guardians will uncover hidden regions across Earth (or, like, the backyard) to find resources and battle Decepticons in turn-based battles. You can play solo, or with friends, and either is gonna be awesome.
Pokemon Go became a dominant craze the summer it debuted, and there’s every reason this could do the same: It looks very cool, nostalgia is big business, and it’s perfect for parents and kids to play together.
The game launches later this year, so you’ll be fighting Decepticons while you’re walking your dog before you know it.
