A Pilot for a James Cameron Produced ‘True Lies’ TV Series Has Been Ordered

Years ago, I worked at a movie theater for a summer. As luck would have it, it was a great summer for movies, and I got to see them all for free, including Speed and The Lion King, for which I would have happily paid, and also The Flintstones and Beverly Hills Cop 3, for which I’m glad I didn’t.
One of the summer’s biggest hits was True Lies, which reunited director James Cameron and star Arnold Schwarzenegger as a spy whose bored wife, Jamie Lee Curtis, rediscovers her mojo when she gets embroiled in his work. The movie was something of a comeback for Arnold Schwarzenegger, who’d just come off 1993’s notorious (and underrated) bomb Last Action Hero.
For a few years in the late 90s, there was talk of a sequel, but it never materialized, and as recently as 2017 there was talk of a TV series that never materialized. Now there are new talks about a new TV series, and according to Variety CBS has ordered a pilot. We’ll see if this one makes it to screens.
The pilot is being written by Matt Nix, who wrote USA’s Burn Notice, also about a (former) spy, and he’s currently writing Disney+’s Turner and Hooch revival series.
James Cameron will produce the show, but there hasn’t been a peep about Arnold or Jamie Lee’s potential involvement, although it seems unlikely that the former governor of California will appear on CBS. Curtis was just cast in the Borderlands movie, after having starred in 2018’s Halloween reboot/sequel, so her career is on the upswing as well.
Perhaps the show will bring back Eliza Dushku (Bring It On) as Arnold and Jaime Lee’s daughter. We already know she’s grown up to be an ass-kicker on shows like Buffy and Dollhouse, so maybe she can be the secret spy in a suburban family.
We’ll find out as the show preps for production – if it even gets that far.
