DC is leaning in to the maybe-not-for-kids direction of their cinematic franchises. There’s another Joker on the way, and with the multiverse opening up, there’s no limit to how freaky things can get. While we may not see a live-action evil Superman any time soon, an animated one will do just fine.
In a press release for the upcoming animated film ‘Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two‘, DC and Warner Bros. Animation revealed a movie based on the popular Injustice video games was in the works… by accident. Among the special features included on Part Two’s Blu-ray and digital editions will be a “Sneak Peek at the next DC Animated Movie – An advanced look at Injustice.”
Warner Bros. Animation hasn’t made an official announcement, but this unofficial/official one is all the info we need. No plot details have been revealed, but I assume we can expect to see more info closer to Part Two’s July 22nd release date. ‘Batman: The Long Halloween Part One‘ releases the month before on June 22nd.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Injustice series, it’s a fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios (Mortal Kombat). It features all of your favorite DC heroes, but offers a pretty bleak story. Without going into crazy spoilers, Superman finally snaps and decides to take over Earth. Batman assembles a team of heroes to fight back, but there are some heroes that take the side of Superman. It’s pretty interesting to see an unhinged Superman and the story is filled with shocking moments. If Warner Bros. hadn’t canceled Zack Snyder’s Justice League sequels, I feel like we would have seen this story come to life. There was a whole comic series released based on Injustice as well, and it’s actually worth reading.
The Injustice universe is ripe with great stories to tell. Hopefully this film won’t just be a one-and-done release and we’ll get to see the entire arc play out over multiple films.
