Ryan Reynolds has another hit on his hands. His latest movie “Free Guy” won at the box office and already has Disney brass asking for a sequel. It was a strong performance for Reynolds, as the movie blew away projections after strong word-of-mouth.
“Free Guy” topped the box office with nearly $30 million and it made more than $50 million in its first weekend around the globe. Those are good numbers for COVID-box offices. “Free Guy” did benefit from being released *only* in theaters, unlike most major releases, which are now going straight to streaming services as well.
The movie wasn’t only a hit with fans, but it scored well with critics too. In fact, the overall critical response for the film is the highest Reynolds has had for any of his movies. It’s currently rated at 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. What some people thought was a maybe-good video game movie ended up being a very good movie about video games (small but critical distinction).
Reynolds broke the news about the sequel, saying “aaaaaannnnd after 3 years messaging Free Guy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!!! #irony.”

In the movie, Reynolds’ character realizes he’s a non-playable character in a video game (similar to GTA) and also stars Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, and Taika Waititi. Reynolds is a good celebrity (does funny work, helps others), he’s a good movie star (strong opening), and he’s once again proven he’s a good actor (reviews are great).
