As the new phase of the MCU begins, we’re running back a few old characters. The first salvo in the next phase is Black Widow‘s long-awaited, and long-delayed, stand-alone movie, and later we’ll get another Spider-Man, another Dr. Strange, and another Thor. But before we get to those, we have two newbies on the docket: The Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
A few months ago, we got our first glimpse of Marvel’s first Asian superhero, complete with a reference to the Mandarin, a legendary marvel villain last seen being played by an imposter in Iron Man 3. Now there’s a new trailer, and this one gives us a little hint at how Shang-Chi might fit in with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Before we get to that, we get a bit of backstory about Shang Chi, who is rebelling against his evil crime lord father, and a glimpse of the ten rings in action. And then, after the titles, we see Shang-Chi preparing to do battle in some kind of cage match that is currently being occupied by two fairly familiar figures – at least according to the online sleuths.
One is Wong, Dr. Strange’s buddy, and the other is Abomination, a monstrous entity known primarily as one of the Hulk’s rivals, and formerly portrayed by Tim Roth (and a lot of CGI) in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk – ya know, the one with Ed Norton. The pair of monsters battled in New York City, and it was so fierce that even despite winning, Bruce Banner transformed into Mark Ruffalo!
The 2008 Hulk is technically a part of the MCU, but it’s largely been disregarded. Abomination’s appearance in Shang-Chi brings the events of that movie back into the fold and paves the way for Shang-Chi to interact with the rest of the characters we know and love.
Check out the trailer, and start speculating about whether or not Tim Roth will return!
