If you’ve been reading The Dad over the past year, it should come as no surprise that we’re big Ted Lasso fans here (the spotty second season notwithstanding)! The show’s cult has grown steadily since it debuted last year, with constant chatter online and big wins at the Golden Globes. Last night, they held the Emmy Awards, and Lasso secured its spot as the current top comedy, with a collection of big wins.
After nabbing 20 nominations this summer, Lasso secured the bag with four wins: Lasso netted statuettes for Outstanding Comedy Series (up against stiff competition like Cobra Kai, Hacks, Pen15, and more), Lead Actor for Jason Sudeikis, Supporting Actress for Hannah Waddingham, who got to hear presenter Seth Rogen botch her name, and Supporting Actor Brett Goldstein. (Roy Kent is every fucking where!) No matter how you feel about the show’s current season, its first will live on as a classic forever, and these wins will keep the recently-renewed-for-season-three show in the spotlight for a while.
Not every The Dad favorite fared so well. The Mandalorian tied The Crown for most nominations but didn’t nab a single win for any of the major awards last night. Nor did WandaVision, which also came in with a slew of noms. The Disney+ shows faced some stiff competition from the likes of Mare of Easttown, The Queen’s Gambit, I May Destroy You, and other less-fanboyish prestige TV.
Nevertheless, with all their nominations, Disney+ has immediately made an impact on the television landscape, and with its big wins, AppleTV+ has made a splash as well. Streaming was all over the place at the Emmys, as it will be for probably the foreseeable future. Here’s hoping more superhero, Star Wars, Karate Kid, and Sudeikis-based content continues to get recognized as the awards move forward.
