Earlier this summer, some news leaked from a trade magazine, seemingly confirming that a long-awaited sequel might finally be in the works. It seemed like production offices had been set up for Wedding Crashers 2, and if the little blurb was meant to be believed, the entire cast was set to come back and start filling a sequel this month. Alas, nothing has materialized, so the idea of another Wedding Crashers hitting theaters or streaming (the rumor pointed to HBO Max) is still just a rumor.
But if you can’t have Wedding Crashers 2, maybe we can have actually crashed weddings? We could all use some fun chaos after the last year and a half, including the movie’s star pals.
That’s what Owen Wilson – back in the spotlight after making his MCU debut on Disney+’s Loki – seems to think. The star was asked about the possibility of a WC2, and while he didn’t have much to say – he wants to make it, if it makes sense.
“It’s one of those movies that seems to connect with people so if we can come up with something we think could be great then I’m sure we’ll do it. I think it’s before anything it was sort of making sure that everybody felt we had a great story,” he told Esquire during an interview.
Movie or not, Wilson suggested some newlyweds might get the next best thing: Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn actually crashing their wedding!
“I guess if the people rise up and demand it, then who are we to say no? I do think that Vince and I have been talking about when this pandemic ends, maybe, crashing some weddings in real life just to celebrate a return to normalcy. So maybe we’ll get some inspiration from that.”
Wilson graces the cover of September’s issue of Esquire, and during that interview, he shed some light on his relationship with Vaughn, and apparently, while they may not have sleepovers like their characters in the movie, they are good buds.
“I met Vince through Ben Stiller, not long after I got to Los Angeles. But it wasn’t until we were sort of working on Wedding Crashers we became friends. And I don’t know, some people you just hit it off with, and are simpatico with.”
Time will tell if Wilson and Vaughn – and any of the other original stars, which included Rachel McAdams, Isla Fisher, Christopher Walken, and an unhinged Will Ferrell – will get together for a sequel. But the possibility of the pair showing up unannounced at an actual wedding almost makes me want to get married again! Almost.
